THE HIKUTAIA HURDLES The distance of the Hikutaia Ilurdies at Paeroa is a mile and threequarters. The top weight is La.pLdarian 10.11, who in tho last three months has shown better staying qualities, and he is sure to he in much favour Avith the noble army of backers. Like many other good performers he failed at Trentliam in the puggy clay, but it may be AA'isfe to overlook his southern performances. BACK TO THE COLOURS After being ruled out at Eilerslie some months ago in respect to races oAcr a mile, Mr N. Grafa's Esquire Avas giA T cn a lengthy holtidaAr. He Avas re-commissioned lately and nominated for the sprijit cA'ent at the Thames meeting. A GOOD MUD LARK Young Paddon is top Aveight in the President's Handicap at Paeroa, and AA'as also nominated for the hurdles, >in which he aa"as allotted 10.4. In the CA*ent of the track be-?! ing heaA r y he Avoukl be better suited in the flat race. WORK RESUMED The Te Rapa trained Gay Rosette one of the best of the open handicap class in Waikato, has again resumed track Avork. On firm courses this Whirlwind mare takes! a lot of beating, so should agniin racc -prominently during the spring. NOT FOR RICCARTON The Hamilton hurdler, Gold Spot, is not to compete at the l National meeting, but may be seen out over country at Paeroa this week. A WINTER CUP RIDE Wellington's hope in the Winter Cup, The Champ, is to be ridden by W. J. Broug'hton. He lis strongly fancied for this eA r ent by the Ern-i pire City sportsmen. COMPEER'S CHANCE Compeer, Avinner of the Pcntlow Handicap at the Timaru meeting, has comc into favour for the Winter Cup. It is reported that lie is improving day by day, and that at the minimum Aveight lie should at least
run very prominently. SPRING EVENTS The Ellerslie hurdler. Biscuit, is undergoing a preparation in view of spring racing. He is still a member of M. O'Connor's team and will therefore be efficient!y schooled. A BIG WEIGHT "With 11.12 in the Thomas Steeplechase of three miles De Friend may be deemed to be very highly assessed. At Easter on the Ellerslie course lie was successful over a lesser distance but with increased poundage over three miles:was; clearly unsuccessful. ESPECIALLY WELL TREATED One of the Lest treated entrants at the Thames fixture (is Xeenah in the Parawai Handicap with 8.1 onlyj one pound over the minimum. On his performances last season it will not have been surprising if lie had been allotted more-weight than ,say Esquire, Val Lit.
