LACK OF ADVICE

CHANGE TO BUTTER

Adverse comment on the lack of definite information regarding' the reversion to home separation of home-separated cream -suppliers who had changed to whole mislk in response to the drive for more cheese was made by Mr W. Kayc, chairman of the Maketawa Co-operative Dairy Company, at the annual meeting. Though the change-over was only four days awajr and the company had tried by letter and telegram to learn something definite, the position was by no means clear, he said. Those suppliers from other companies who Avere now .supplying the Maketawa -company with milk for cheese-making would he expected to continue supplying„ Make tawa with cream. That was his ruling, in view

of a published statement that the Mi roister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, had asked dairy companies in view of the seriousness of "the tyre position to urge suppliers with-, in reasonable distance to use horse transport. " ; It should have been possible before now for the position to have been clearly outlined to Dairy Divi-. sion officers, who could have arranged meetings between transport operators and dairy factory directors, Mr Kaye said. Local problems could then have been discussed anil transport arranged on the most economical basis; especially with regard to tyres. Transport came very seriously into- the position, for in view of the serious tyre position mileage must Jx: reduced to a minimum and zoning introduced. A committee had been set up at Inglewood. but;

il com prised only .transport opera-, ions, -with no dairy factory representatives. However, though many m : .ght have to revert to horse transport, entailing loss of time, the uosib'on would be faced.
