RACING NOTES
A LONG INTERVAL The win of the former New Zca]ancler, Yours Truly, at the Ascot meeting in Sj'dney Avas his first success since early in the season, when he won the Victoria Park Handicap, on August 13 last year. RETIRED FROM THE TURF The Matamatn owned Duvacli and Kilcash have been retired from the turf, and their boxes will be occupied by two year olds which have just been put into work. SOUTH ISLAND BRED First Round, who consequent upon recent victories, is now highly fancied for the Winter Cup, is South Island bred. By Nightly from the Clifford Estate bred Knockout by Winning Hit bj' Antagonist, she lacks little on the score of breeding, PERSISTENCY The Southland owned Slayer has had three unsuccessful attempts to win tlie Grand National Steeplechase. He is reported to be at the top of his form now and next week will have another try in the big crosscountry event. BROUGHTON ON THE CHAMP W. J. Broughton, who has been | previously associated with The Champ, will ride the Defoe gelding on Saturday in the Winter Cup. Broughton has been on the winner of two Winter Cups, Catalogue in 1937 and Lady Tinkle two years ago, and his mounts are always well fancied by the public. FOXIANA SCHOOLS WELL Contrary to reports that have been circulated, Foxiana was absent from the tracks only one morning fqllowing the knock he got on the second day at the Wellington meeting. Last week, with D. W. Redstone in the saddle, he was sent over the country at Awapuni without taking on the logs and the sod wall.
AGAIN IN COMMISSION Mr C. E. Robertson's Elver England is again in Avork at Riccarton in charge of Clarrie McCarthy. He is still on the scholing list, so for the meantime at least lie will be in the jumping division. If he shows as much determination in negotiating hurdles as he did In his barrier antics he will give the opposition a difficult time. GRAND NATIONAL MEETING The early favourites for the Grand National meeting's principal eventsare in the N.G. Steeplechase Foxiana, Dozie Boy and Master Lackham; the Winter Cup Don't Forget, Boloj'na, Sally Limn and The Champ and the National Hurdles Evans Head, Kanui te Pai and Pekoe. A STOUT PEDIGREE Alienate, winner of the Vittoria Hurdles at Trentliam,, is a five year old brown gelding by Siegfried from Alimony, by Gainscourt from Arbitration by Tribulation. The next dam, Merc Mere, Avas a half sister to St. Elma, winner of the Grand National Steeples. BIG FIELDS The question of big fields and the necessity in many cases for divisions being run, is still occupying the minds of racing clubs. Among the suggestions just noted to overcome the difficulty is one to make general and substantial increases in the distances of races, including the prevision of several more two-mile events, notably on metropolitan courses. NOT POSSIBLE Back in Gay Boa was beaten into third place in the Hadlow Hack and Hunters" Hurdles at Waslulyke prior to bringing oil' a surprise in the Winter Cup. History will not be repeated this year, none of Saturday's candidates in the hurdle event at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting aspiring in that direction.
