MANY OFFENCES
PAINTER FOR SENTENCE AMOUNT OF £279 INVOLVED A series of 2:? charges, including a number of housebreaking, theft, receiving stolen goods, forging and Uttering, were preferred against a painter, Clifford Douglas Keane, aged 28, before Mr E. H- Levien, S.M., last week. Invo-lv'.ng £279 in money and property, the offences "Were'committed between September last year and July 1(>, and they included an escape from custody on February 14.
Constable Spencc, of Waihi, said lie arrested accused at AVaihi for the theft of two diamond rings valued at £28 at AVhakatane. When lie "was; being escorted to AVhakatane accused escaped from the train.
Detective I. V. Jones said he arrested accused on July 14. Accused made 19 statements to witness and Detect ive-Seregant Aplin covering the oifences with which lie was charged. Many of the houses entered by accused were in suburbs in .[Auckland and he had also committed offences at Hamilton and Whakatane. He had £61 in his possessoin when arrested.
In respect of a charge of breach of probation, Mr J. Anderson, probation officer,- said accused was. released from the Waikcria Borstal Institute on June 3 last year, but failed to report after a short period.
Pleas of guilty were entered on • all counts, and accused, who was handcuffed to a constable in the <dock, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
