Sharp Earthquake A sharp earthquake shook Whakatane and surrounding districts in the early hours of Sunday morning. The shock though not violent was. sufficient to rock houses and 'waken light sleepers.

Edgecumbe Drainage (.Jood progress is now being made with the construction of the drains fronting the railway lease sections at Edgecumbe. Some 2-' i chains have been completed to date. The 2-1" pipe culvert at the station gatewa\* has been lowered to the new level. I would like the direction of the council as it its policy in respect of dealing with existing cul|verts to gateways. I consider that these should be not less than 12" diameter. Some of the existing culverts are less than this. My estimate made no provision in this matter. The grand march will take place at 10 p.m. and it is hoped that a big majority of those taking part will comply Avith the request of the organiser and be attired in a national costume, representing any nation Avhich is allied to the cause of freedom. Flu and Condy's Crystals As people are usually prepared to take advantage of other peoples experiences, it is Avorthy of note in these days when influenza is so prevailcnt to recall a simple remedy which a Whakatanc resident declares was most efficacious during the epidemic of 1918. This consisted merely of 'sniffing' up a weak lotion i'o Condys crystals through the nose and letting it penetrate into the mouth. Our informant who is a returned soldier declares that in the whole of his battalion there Avere no deaths from flu while this method Avas practiced. ,
