RACING NOTES
A BRILLIANT GALLOPER Don't Forget, after a few weeks of cxcrcisc oil the roads, has resumed galloping at Riccarton, and lie is putting great dash into his short sprints. lie is as brilliant as ever, and C. Emerson should have him ready to show good form in early spring races. RETIRED The Nightmarch jnaro Night K; notion, winner of tlie Members' ] handicap at li io W eilingion meeting, has now been j-cl.ired from lhe turf, in which department she eeflainly made good. Pu•• chased liiror seasons ago by Mrs C. Faith, () ;; T c jioro, near Wellington, for Lite modest sum of 150 guineas she won over £31)00 in stakes. On .several occasions her victories resulted in big dividends being paid, out to her supporters, so she leaves tfie field of active racing considerably in credit. HEAVY GOING Thus a Wellington writer: ''Once more I find it necessary to comment Oil the foolishness of turning out horses in races where the going is not suitable. There is no misery equal to that of a hard pressed horse who cannot manage sticky or heavy ground. The distress is obvious to every one, even to those not experienced in racing matters." FOR DERBY HONORS The Canterbury owned King Herod has just been re-commissioned for Air J. 11. Grigg. He is to be prepared for the N.Z. Derby to be run in November. FOR HURDLING Mr Wenzl Scholium's Tloreke. which lias not been an outstanding success yet on the Hat is to be transferred to the hurdle division. QUICKLY WITHDRAWN Whackic the Avinner of five races in reecnt months, a strong fancy for the Winter Cup, was withdrawn from this race on the appearance of the weights. Probably his party did not consider him 'a good thing"' with 9.13 the poundage also allotted to Boloyne, a very line performer over a mile. REGAL FOX IN WORK As the winner of the Great Northern Derby Regal Fox certainly hay racing credentials of merit. He lias just been put into work again at Avon dale, and as a four year old next season should race prominently. HALF-SISTER TO ERNDALE The well known breeder of Emdale, Mr Walter James, of Avondale, now has in work a full sister to the Great Northern Hurdles winner by Hazvat —Lunette, that shows distinct promise. She will race under the name of Ernette. A WINTER CUP FANCY South ' Canterbury sportsmen arc pinning their faith to All Night for the Winter Cup. The Nightly gelding is executing exceptionally good track work. SUSTAINED A RICK Treasurer, winner of the last Winter Cup, and who was expected to run well next week sustained a severe rick while working at lliccarton last week. His trainer. H. Nurse, who also has St. Cloud in full commission. may have to rely on the latter for August S. G.N. STEEPLECHASE Following the allotment of the weights i\: r tin- Grand National Steeplechase then- N likely lo be a good acceptance list .for the (Jrami National SiecpU-cha-s. to be run on August <N. The top weight. Foxiana 13 .lo is fairly treated after Id- 'Wellington victory with U.S. and as he is training en well wiil be the lending fancy. He wih probaniy rel isn the firmer going at Riccarton. Master Lackham 30.2 ard Slayer 1.0 .are likely, to bo well supported from the right quarters, but wiil find Foviann a very difficult one to. defeat. Erndalc 11.0 has plenty of poundage for a maiden steeplechaser, and is more likely to be kept for the G.N. Hurdles. Dozie Boy 10.fi is nicely treated on his Eilcrsiic running, and should negotiate the big Riccarton jump. Clansman 3 0.9 will be better suited to the track than he was at Trentham, and is always a possibility on account of his pace, jumping ability and gamen'ess. iJallybrit, Anglo French, Cherry Plum and Aussie lta may be the best of the lower weighted division.
