PRESIDENT'S REVIEW

WHAKATANE PLUNKET SERVICE

ANNUAL MEETING TO-DAY

■The annual report to be presented by Mrs M. D. Cairns, president of the Whakatane Phmket Society at the. annual meeting of the Parish Hall this afternoon reads as under :

Alter the annual meeting of last year, the President (Mrs Southey) and members of the committee were most concerned at tile state of the finances and after consultation with our Advisory Committee it was decided to approach the Mayor and ask for his assistance, also to address circular letters lo every woman in Whakatane, saying that without help, the Phmket Socn-ty in Whakhtane would to func-

tion. The response in each ease was most heartening. The Borough .Council made a grant of £20. The general meeting called to enlarge the committee was attended by approximately 70 people. Mr Hayden offered his services in running a series ol' danees. others offered articles for competitions. The committee added 15 new members to its ranks and all worked with such goodwill that inside of two months there was sufficient money in hand to carry the branch to the end of Its• iinaneial year. Activities which engaged the. committee were a picture benefit, the dances, card parties, a .street collection and stall. Owing to leaving the district, the president's (Mrs Southev) and secretary's (Miss Thatcher) resignations were received with regret. Mrs Partridge as secretary and myself as president carry on. A successful garden party was held at Mrs F. Pr.'deaux's residence at which Mrs Southey was fa re wc 11ed.

On behalf of Mrs Son they and self, I "wish tO' thank the members and committee for their Milling help during the year.' To those people who have assisted the committee, \vc tender our sincere thanks especially Mrs Prideaux for the use of her grounds and Mrs Morgan for help at card parties and Mrs Millar for loan of crockery and -wish the incoming committee every success.
