RACING NOTES
TRAINER RETIRING. J. B. Pearson, one of the best known trainers at Pucearton for many years, has decided to retire. His stables on the Yaldhurst Road have been purchased by C. G. Humphries. NATIONAL DOUBLE Padishah is the only horse to have succeeded in -winning the Grand National Steeples and Hurdles in the same year. This year Foxiana, Hunting Lore, Erndale, Turaki, Master Lackham. and Merry March have been nominated in both races, FELL AGAIN Erndale, who jumped with dash when he Avon the Great Northern Hurdles, fell from grace at Trentham when he blundered at a fence in each of his two starts. The son of Lapidary succeeded in getting over the first fence only in both the Trcntham and Winter Hurdles. WILL MAKE THE GRADE For a hack, Black Renardc ma tic a creditable showing in her first ap-
pcarancc in open company when she finished a close fifth in the Whyte Handicap. She was prominent with the leading bunch all the way and failed to hold fourth place only in the last stride. She has returned to Hawcra. LEADING TRAINER For another year T. R. George is assured of being the Dominion's leading trainer. His score for the season is 40 winners. F. Smith is second with 26, L. G. Morris and P. Burgess equal third with 20. Then comes W. E. Hazlett, 19; H. Dulieu, IB; B. Burgess, G. W. B. Greene, B. H. Morris, A. E. Neale and T. Vcrncr, each 11.
BROKE A STIRRUP Pekoe was going a good race in the Winter Hurdles and "was up handy to the lender, Lapidarian, when a stirrup broke, and A. Jenkins had anything but a comfortable ride from then on. Under the circumstances Pekoe did well to finish third, but it is doubtful whether he would have had any chance with the winner, Evans Head, under any circumstances. CRASH BRINGS CHANGE The stewards of the Hawkc's Bay Jockey Club have decided that in future hurdle events run at Hastings, a set of hurdles will be erected in front of the stands in place of the hurdle on the bend between the mile and six furlongs posts. It was at the last-named fence that seven horses fell in a hurdle race at the last Hawkc's Bay meeting, and the change is the outcome of representations made to the club by the Jockeys' Association.
THREE TIMES RUNNER-UP In beating all but Centrepoisc in the Parliamentary Handicap. Old Bill ran another slashing race. With 0.9 to carry, the son of Siegfried was set no easy task, bu;t he hit the j front in the run home only to be beaten over the concluding stages by Centrepoise, who Avas the favourite. Old Bill lias now filled the role of runner-up three times on end. SHOWED NO DASH Clansman showed none of his former dash in the July Steeplechase at Trcntham, and at no stage did he hit the lead. Usually lie is out in front in his races, but on this occasion lie was never going like a winner, being always about fourth until the last round was under way. when he began to drift and was soon ing a hopeless position—so much so that he. was pulled up before the j journey was completed. ! AUTHORESS IMPROVES Alienate did not jump too well in the Corunna Hurdles at Trenthum, and lost ground, at nearly every fence, while he. did. not finish on as well as on the first day, and had no chance of getting up to Authoress, which was one of tin- leading division throughout and won comfortably. Flying Spy foil at the last fence when going well with Authoress and Mnster. C.vkion, and Hunting Lore fell over him. . *"
