RECLAIMING OUR MUDFLATS
THE continued interest of the Whakatane Harbour Board in the now elderly project for the reclaiming and ultimate development of the substantial mudflat area at the rear of the town is particularly commendable in these times when so many worthy undertakings are being shelved on account of the war. The large mudflat area butting on to Commerce Street east, must in years to come constitute an integral part of the future Whakatane business area. Already much of the tidal land has been reclaimed indeed, 75 per cent of Whakatane's business premises are built upon sites which at some time or other were washed by the tide. The proposal, therefore, to investigate the possibilities of developing the substantial area bounded by McGarvey's Road on the north, Louvain Street on the west and Commerce Street on the south is one which must have: a vital influence on the aspect of the Whakatane of the future. The Harbour Board's survey should therefore be watched with the closest interest, for its adoption and application must mean big thing-s for our town.
