r lhe question of solving the mystery of the prolonged siren blast on the occasion of the last fire exercised the municipal mind at the meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council last Monday. After several councillors had offered speculative theories, the Electrical Engineer, Mr F. Lysaght, profcrred the most probable solution. The messenger whose duty it is to switch the alarm off, could not get to the station until after the tire and lie in his haste to rectify llie position switched off the' town siren but left the Kopeopeo one to broadcast its dismal agony far some time after. The public commotion which has resulted will, w& hope ensure that there will be no repetition in future.
