RACING NOTES
A JUMPING STRAIN True Range, now in the ranks of lumpers, is by Salamagundi—Direct Hit, the dam of the successful steeplechaser Ballybrit. IN NEW OWNERSHIP Mr G. L. Baigent's First Round, who has been running prominently at southern meetings, has been purchased by Mr W, F, Cook, of Khandallali, Wellington. CHANGE OF LOCATION Don Quex, lately trained at El-« lerslie is now a member of G. W. New's AAvapuni team, having been purchased by Messrs J. and J. McMillan, of Palmerston North. He is forward in respect to racing yfoii and may not lie long in winning his purchase money. WAS NOT SOLD The well known Hawke's Bay steeplechaser, Cherry Plum, was offered by auction at a sale of Mr G. D. Beatson's stock, but did not change hands. Since then he has earned 55 guineas for running second in the Awapuni Steeples, and as the jumping sea,son has not l'ar advanced lie is likely to be in the money again very soon. INQUISTIVE A story is going the rounds ancnt the now successful jumper Evans Head. When running in a Waira-f rapa paddock as a juvenile he saw a mob of sheep driven into an ad-s joining field. He had not previously seen these "woolly animals, but becoming interested he jumped over the wire fence, closelj- inspected the scurrj'ing sheep and leisurely jumped the dividing fence to again take up his pasture rights. From that day lie was considered to be quite a natural junker, and in his three successive victories recently under racing colours has borne out that opinion. A STICKY TRACK In the Wellington Steeplechase contest Clansman followed his usual practice of going to the front and putting a big break on the liekl. But as in 3 7 ears past the sticky clay track beat him as it has done to hundreds of other good performers, and allowed the stoutly bred Foxiana to emerge victorious. BACK TO RICCARTON Night Hawk, trained at El lerslie for the greater part of the season, has been taken back to Riccarton by trainer S. Barr, who brought Erination and Hurry Girl up to the Great Northern meeting. AFTER A SPELL Soon to again resume work as u member of Hector Gray's Takanini team is Brazen Bold. He has been nicely wintered by his owner, and it may only be a matter of a few weeks befoi'e the speedy representative is again in galloping action with the colours up. STANDING UP TO HIS WORK Trainer T. Verner lias Te Ivawiti standing up to his work very satis-i factorily, and if the Night Raid —- Queen March representative can be produced in public before the tracks harden, he should again be a good [racing proposition. PROUD FOX RECOVERING Of Fred Smith's Takanan'i team Gold Money Song, Cambria, Cornish, Route March and Beau Vaals are on the eas\- list. Proud Fox, operated 011 some weeks ago for respiratory trouble, is again in commission. If he can stage a come back quite a number ol' his supporters will be more than pleased. A DISAPPOINTMENT One of the biggest disappointments of the season has been Hit* Masterton trained Kentucky. But lie i> still being handicapped on past performances. and may need to be dropped in the weights before increasing [lb winning total. TURNED OUT Last year's Great Northern Hurdles winner, Esperance Bay,' Avho failed badly at the Waikato and Auck-< land meetings, lias been sent home to Blenheim and turned out for a spei!. A CLASSY ADDITION X rising two year old filly by Broiefort—Spearform, thus a halfsister to Classf'crm, has just joined the team presided over by P. E.' Pope at Takanini,
