HOPE FOR INDUSTRY
WIRELESS MANUFACTURE
RESTRICTED OUTPUT AND
STANDARD SETS
Business in wireless sets has been t'ery brisk in the past few months, and it was stated b\ r radio retailers that if the, volume of sales was maintained models in hand would be all sold in three or four months' time. However, it is considered that, when the potentialities of the industry on the wartime basis on which it was put have been fully discovered, there may still be an opportunity for a restricted output to meet the domestic demand. America's example in authorising the manufacture of a standard type receiving set is expected to be followed if it is found feasible to allow some civil production. The American model is described as of medium power and price, and of quite satisfactory range. At present, however, the controllers of all factories, of which there are 17 in Auckland alone, are com eentrating on the problems involved in the turnover to war production. A great deal of experimental work lias been done by enthusiastic tech-' nicians, much of it at private expense, and even the experts have been surprised at what has been proved can be done in this country in the designing and making of precision instruments of high quality. There are certain parts, such as valves, which cannot be produced economically in this country, and these will have to be brought from abroad. It has been revealed that after the war this industry and allied activities Avill be much more selfcontained than hitherto, but on a war basis it will probably be neces* sary for some factories to conecn- | trate on the manufacture of one or two components of the instruments, the assembling being done by the larger concerns, which will be the master contractors.
