MAORI EDUCATION

LONGER TRAINING NEEDED

MR W. SULLIVAN'S SUCIC.KSTION

Speaking in the House last week, Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., said lie desired to express his appreciation to the Minister lor the excellent work done in the Native schools. There were in the Bay of Plenty a large number of such schools and within the last few years there had been marked improvement in accommodation and general conditions, due to the present Minister and the efforts of his predecessor. The teachers were taking a great interest in their work and the children were working in a better environment. The teachers in the backblocks particularly, were doing great work, as were also the instructors in cookery, homescience and arts and crafts. He hoped a porgramme would be devised to care for the boys and girls when they reached the leaving age. It might be good policy to devise some scheme under which boys could continue their technical training so as to lit them to take their life in the community. It would be better to spend even a large sum ol money in establishing such continuation schools than to develop along the present lines under a system ol Social Security. He realised of coursc that the present might not be an opportune time, but he hoped the matter would be borne in mind.
