RACING NOTES
RELATED TO DEFAULTER i The bay lialf brother (by Buland- j sliar) to Defaulter has been named Expanse. He was bred by Mr lan JYleßae, Masterton, and topped the yearling sales in January at 1050 guineas. HAUGHTY WINNER SOLD Mr T. H. Coltman has sold Haughty Winner to Mr J. 11. Cochrane, Gore, and the horse "will take up stud duties in the coining season. Haughty Winner, by Winning Hit, has been spelling at Riccarton since he retired from racing last November. NOT MATTER OF £ S. D. Of the 187 jockeys licensed this season, only six claim to go to scale at 7.0, while 23 give their lowest riding weight as 7.7. A lew of these lads are now undergoing military training, with drastic effect upon their weight, and one of these alleged seven-stoners could not go under 8.1 at a recent meeting. Seemingly we will have to develop a new race of jockeys for the future. HOT SHOT'S PREPARATION Nothing in the way of fast work Is being allotted the hurdler Hot Shot. However, he is making good headway and will be nearly at best the next time he goes to the post. This jumper is likely to Avin some money early in the new season. PROGRESS OF BATTLEDRESS Battledrcss is performing his daily allotted pace tasks in jjleasing style at Hawcra. He is a light-hearted horse and is revelling in his work in a manner suggesting that lie will be read}' to race -as soon as required. DOING WELL War Effort, Avhicli performed so promisingly in his two year old races, is reported to have done well during his let-up and is doing a few weeks' road exercise preparatory to resuming track work in preparation for his three year old racing. CURT AIL'S NEXT APPEARANCE W. Rayner intends giving Curtail a race at the Manawatu-Rangitikei Hunt Club meeting at Marton on Jul3 T 28. The Posterity—Curtain gelding is going along nicely and promises to furnish into a stood five year old. SOFTLY RESUMES After a short spell Softly has re>sumed work in preparation for spring racing. The daughter of Iliad and Quietlj r failed to reveal her true form during the present term, but as a ftv£ year old next season she is likely to come right again. CHANGE OF STABLES The two year old filly Catrine, formed}' trained by I. Tucker, has joined Geo. Jenkins" team. By Lang Bian—Medusa, no fault can be found with the breeding of (Katrine, but her form so far has not reached expectations. A LIKELY HUNTER A recent addition to the track workers at Ellerslie is the four year old Illumination gelding Ramillies, formerly trained by Ashley Jenkins. He is" now being prepared by Geo. Jenkins and is a likely-locking customer. Ramillies is a qualified hunter and should net be hard to place in that class. R. S. BAGBY'S TEAM Members of R. S. Bagby'.s team recently recommissioned include Hot Pursuit, Lady Elx, Phaleron and Suntrap. Hot Pursuit looks improved as the result of his holiday, and the son of Foxbridge and Calicnte is expected to make a name for himself as a three year old next season.! Beth on the track and in her races Suntrap displayed any amount cf speed, but failed to run on. Unless the daughter of Broiei'ort and Sunbar improves in stamina 3ier prospects of winning a race do not appear bright. RACING FIXTURES July 11 — Wellington (.mb j Ju!y 25 —South Canterbury lI.C. ] |
