SAVING OLD RUBBER
The shortage of rubber stocks and the need for conserving old rubber for reclamation purposes as a war measure has been engaging the attention"" of the Auckland Farmers' Union. The executive Avrote to the Government as far back as February 23 suggesting that discarded milking machine rubbers might be of use and offering its services in the matter of collection. At last meeting of the executive a letter was-) received from the Ministry of Supply stating that one reclaim factory is about to commence opera-' tions. and that dctali." of a second plant are under consideration. A plan has been formulated for the collection of old rubber, and details will be published at an early date. The Union's offer of co-operation was appreciated and would be utilised. The Secretary. Mr A. E. Robinson, said there was still no definite information as to whether supplies of discarded dairy machine rubber would be wanted or what"rate of payment might be expected. One of the members stated that he xmderstood dairy rubber was not suitable for reclamation, as it became too hard after treatment and lacked elasticity.
