NEEDED URGENTLY
CONVENIENCE FOR TANEATUA PROCEEDING WITH PROJECT The question of erecting public conveniences in other parts of the County—Matata, Edgccumbc and Te Teko cropped up at the meeting of the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday as a result of the discussion on the position at Taneatua. The special investigatory committee set up last month to go into the position at Taneatua reported that it investigated the necessity for a public convenience at Taneatua and recommended favourably on the proposal, but asked that council deckle its policy in' regard to the financing of the Capital and Maintenance costs of such facilities and that the Education Department be asked if "it would sell a public convenience site with a 50ft frontage, immediately south of the Taneatua Library building. The chairman, Mr Burnett, said there was no doubt but that there was an urgent need for such public facility, and he would like it proceeded Avith without delay. Crs Burt and Spence mentioned the claims of Matata and Edgccumbc In the same respect. The chairman said that it might become quite an expensive matter for all centres had a right to enter similar claims. There was no doubt but that the position at Taneatua had deteriorated badly. Cr M-cCready blamed what he termed "the poison shops" maintaining that persons in their right mind would not be capable of such behaviour which was seen regularly at Taneatua. It was decided to write the Education Board as recommended and to meet the initial construction cost from County funds, maintenance to be furnished by the adjoining riding or ridings.
