NEW CEMETERY
BOROUGH AND COUNTY CONFER SCHEME PLAN REQUIREDThe Borough Council writing the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday advised that proceedings under the provisions of the Public Works Act were in hand for the taking of land for a eemetejry, area 9 acres 1 rood 30 perches. An arrangement was adopted whereunder the County Engineer and the Borough Foreman-Engineer were to prepare a cemetery scheme plan for submission to both bodies for approval, names of trees to be indicated. It was advised that Mr Henderson had unsuccessfully endeavoured to enlist the assistance of Mr Brebner, prior to his departure, and Mr Tomkins subsequently. It was essential that arrangements respecting the new cemetery proceed with a minimum of delay, and it was asked thajt Mr Tomkins be instructed, in order that the scheme plan might be proceeded with right away. The council resolved that Under present conditions it regretted that Mr Tomkins will not be able to afford the necessary time for this work and respectfully suggested that a price be obtained for which it would be prepared to find half the cost.
