RACING NOTES
PLEURON FOR JUMPING The highly bred but disappointing Caledon representative, Pleuron, now a member of R. Mateer's team at Matamata, is giving encouraging signs of making good over the jumps. He is quite a likely stayer, and is said to be schooling capably. ON EASY LIST While contesting the Great Northern Steeples, in which he finished second to Dozie Boy, the Paeroa representative Conflagration, sustained a severe knock to a foreleg. He is still on the easy list, and may not be seen out again under racing colours for many weeks. PROGRAMME FOR ERNDALE Of keen interest to sportsmen is the proposed programme for Erndale for the remainder of the winter season. He is being nominated for both flat and jumping races. It is considered in some quarters that his next mission may be the Trentham Hurdles, but it would not be a matter for surprise if he is particularly set for the Grand National Hurdles to be decided at Riccarton in August. BIRKOLOGY AMISS Early in the month it was considered more than likely the Hawlce's Bay cross-country candidate Birlcologj', would start a strong preparation. Such has proved to be too optimistic under the circumstances, as lie has shown signs of tenderness, and will not, therefore be further persevered with. PLENTY OF SPEED The HaAvke's Bay trainer, J., H. Jeft'erd, who only shelters in his boxes thoroughbreds of class, that have to show undoubted galloping capabilit3 r , has just taken in hand a two year old filly by Paper Money from the very brilliant Knockfin. She is likely to come to hand in time for early spring racing. ANOTHER FOR HURDLING One of the classiest of the numerous Surveyor family is the New Plj'moutli owned Surveyor General, who has been quite a good proposition to his owner. At present he is being allotted a well earned spell, after which he Avill be schooled over the timber. STAYING ON Although Besiege's best distance over the battens is a mile and a half, he can sometimes score over a little further. At Hastings he beat a good field in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, one mile and ers with 10.9. The General Latour representative is very forward in resx)ect to racing condition just now. and is therefore likely to score further successes.
MASTER LACKHAM IMPROVED The Manawatu jumper. Master Lackham, second to Chat in the Winter Steeples at Eller.slie. is reported to be all the better for 3lis experience. It is stated he may be alowed to miss Trentham in favour, of the better ground at Riccarton. TO RESUME WORK 1 The Te Awamutu owned Nizam, the full-brother to High Caste, who is being wintered by Mr J. McGoveru, will rejoin R. S. iiJagby's team at Eilerslio next month. As a three year old he should be a high rank performer, as every member of the J family lias proved to be a galloper | of decided merit. I s i TO BE SOLD The two year olds Dominate and Indian Sign, raced this season by the late Mr Ralph Stewart, owner of Beau Yite, are to be sold at the Trentham winter sale of thoroughbreds in July. Beau Vite, who is still in Frank McGratlrs chargc in Sydney is to be raced in Australia in the approaching season, but may be brought over to compete in the Auckland ('.lip nn 'ioxing Day.
