A WORD FOF FIRE BRIGADES
THE prominence accorded the Kangitaiki Plains Dairy Company's Fire Brigade,, as a result of its splendid service last Saturday afternoon, brings to mind the work of the organisation generally. Here we have a body of men, whose only objective in standing together as an organisation is in order to give a public service—gratis. The fact that they form up with a brigade, means that they are likewise willing to accept obligations a.nd certain standards of living. Training will make demands upon leisure, physical fitness so necessary in the course of arduous and dangerous work, must bo maintained. These things are shouldered by the men themselves and that they recognise and accept them, is borne out by the splendid record of service they have achieved. The fire service since its foundation over a hundred years ago has grown into a, brotherhood which is not only Dominionwide but reaches out across the sea and draws by common bond the fire services which are operating in all civilised lands. In its wonderful progress and advancement we can definitely say that the will-to-serve without thought of remuneration or reward of any kind, has been a sure foundation stone which can never deteriorate or decay. While it remains in the shape of voluntary brigades it must always be a symbol and an inspiration to mankind generally.
