SEASON CONCLUDES
WHAKATANE BOWLING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD A' representative mustef of district bowlers attended the annual meeting of the YVhakatane Bowling Club Avhich Avas held in the Caledonian Hall last Saturday evening. From the chairman's (Mir R. F. Smith) report it was obvious that the game had been Avell supported and that in spite of Avar conditions, restricted travelling facilities etc. that the past season had been one of the most successful in the club's history. The balance sheet Avhich Avas taken as read showed a credit balance of £U7 l'.iis 3d and excess assets over liabilities amounting to £558. Complimentary references to the oxecutiA'e and the capably manner in Avhich the members had handled the club's affairs during the year and safeguarded the finances, Avere voiced by Messrs W. Howat, S. McLcod and C. G. Caisley. Mention of the increased number of tournaments and the reA r enue. which had resulted from them Avas also made by A T arious speakers, Avho claimed that these e\ 7 ents had also done much to improve the standard of play. The election of officers resulted as under:— Patron: Mr W. SulliA*an, M.P. President-: Mr W. Henderson. Vice-president: Mr A,lf. Burgess. Hon. Secretary: \Mr H. L. Drube. Greens Superintendent: Mr A. CKing. ExecutiA'c: Messrs C. Pearson, J. Creeke, S. McLcod, A. C. King, J. Healey. Selector and Ilandicapper: Mr S. McLeod. Coach: Mr C. Loane. Hon. Auditor: Mr D. G. ium . Delegates to Bay of Plenty Boavling Centre: W. Henderson (president) and 11. L. Drube (secretary). Introducing the matter of country membership, Mr Les Luxton said that he considered if country members (aylio paid a fee of a guinea) Avere enabled to take part in the week-end tournaments the club would be more popularised, and country players Avould be given a fairer chance to indulge in an occasional game. He did not mean that this concession should entitle a man to participation in the competitions. The subject provoked considerable discussion, speakers stating that Avhile they favoured the suggestion up to a certain point, theere Avas also the possibility of abuse. The question Avas finally referred, to the executive, for consideration and decision . M>r O'Rourkc speaking on behalf of neAv players said he Avished the coacli Avould make a point of fostering beginners. In the past, from his own observations, he thought that some of the new members had been rather and brasquely handled. He urged the coach haA'e this in mind Avhen he undertook the training of new members who had never been on the greens before. The chairman said he Avas sure the remarks in this connection Avould be appreciated by Mr Loane, the club's official cioach.
