ON THE LINKS
WHAKATANE GOLF CLUB Last Saturday afternoon out on the links at Paroa pex-fect weather conditions reigned supreme. Plenty of sunshine and no breeze (golfers bug bear) made it an ideal golfers day. As a result, there was a good attendance of members of both sexes. It may not be known to the public, but all golfers who play on our links would notice it that the landscape presents an ever changing vista as one progresses round the course. The surrounding hills, stately Mt. Edgecumbe distant high mountain ranges, sharp silhouette of the rugged mountain coast-line, snow-capped Mt. Hikurangi the blue sea, the "Whale" and to come nearer home, the course itself green fairways, waving flags on greens and mere man striding after or preparing to smite the elusive pill out of sight. All these add enchantment to the scene; and viewed as "Slice" and his partner saw it from the 17th tee, was deserving of the very beautiful sentiments expressed by the latter. Such a day and amid such surroundings it was indeed great to be alive. Results To return to the subject, sectional match play was the objective. The winners of some of the sections were also decided. The results were as follows:—■ Rangi lost to Spence; Luxton lost to Anderson; Milne lost to Morpeth; Bullard lost to Butler; Dr Dawson lost to Moore; Armstrong lost to Campbell; Mollgaard lost to Stone; Coclcerell lost to Syme; Barrj r lost to Littlejohn; Luxton lost to Suckling. The club captain reserves right to make alterations to above draw when occasion arises. Etiquette Strict observance of the Etiquette of golf is essential at all times. It is more so new, because of having only one match afternoon for both ladies and men. Remember winter daj-s are. short and with more players there may be congestion and waiting at tees. So rules to be observed to alleviate these conditions being:— 1. Move smartly between shots. 2, Move off green after holing out. o. 1,1.' yon loose your ball, wave couple following to pass through. 4. To do away with lost bnlls, keep your eye on your cppent'.s shot, to take notice of the piace whore his ball lands. If you have a typical 'Henderson" shot or a 'Butler'' curve, you need to observe this rule more closely—it saves time, your place, and your temper. i>. Fast two somes, when ea telling up to three somes or four somes please call "fore'* before .cuU'mg through. Never play shots on to front players without "Honking the Horn." At present time, the fairways are very soft, and huge divot holes are apparent everywhere. Look after
' your course, by replacing all divots, big or little. Replacing it is not sufficient, but stamp it well home all around. Doing this saves your course and conserves temper of those following who sometimes get a "Divoty" lie and see you walking nonchalantly ahead oblivious of bomb holes you'd left behind uncovered. Look out for the Ladies Men teeing up from No. 1 please watch out for ladies on their tee. The honour may be theirs and as. since the days of Eden, the honour has always been theirs. Therefore respect it. Do not drive off without warning any ladies who may be on their tee of your intention to do so. Accidents happen. It must be avoided. Mixed Foursomes At a date later on, suitable to both ladies and men' members the club captain intends the men to play as hosts to the ladies in a mixed Canadian foursomes. Matches of this type "were hard to manage in the past for all. A mixed foursome now and again adds varict3 r to competitions' and makes for good team work. Whatever else anyone may say about it, it should promote good fellowship amongst club members and the ladies are quite able to show us men some pointers about golf. So that's a date! Gentlemen, the ladies! LADIES' GOLF DRAW FOR SATURDAY On Saturday next the 2nd round of the Appleby Cup will be played and in conjunction an extra medal. The draw is as under:—
