WHAT'S HAPPENED TO RUGBY

THE utter futility of promoting senior club fotbali during the war period, should not deter the enthusiasts who usually compose the personnel of our Rugby Unions from seeking to institute a junior competition to occupy the Saturday afternoons for the youth of the community. We are now half way through June and as yet we have not heard a whisper of a Rugby programme or any likelihood of one. Unfortunately we know what happened last year and jferhaps it is that very experience which disheartens would-ibe promoters this season. The fact remains, that in Whakatane to-day there are dozens of husky young fellows who. would welcome a weekly Rugby encounter with open arms. .We note that the war did not prevent the bowling section from taking their usual relaxation to the full, nor does it prevent the golfing fraternity from enjoying a weekly round. The gap appears to be in connection with our young people and this group includes the boys between school and military training age, who are at present spending their Saturday afternoons in idleness or the picture theatres. Knowing the tendency of idle hand,s, let us do something to give them clean healthy exercise and occupation. A war should not completely paralise our sense of sport and duty to the youth of the town.
