WHAKATANE ASSOCIATION

Mr Iv. Runciman, president, presided over the first meeting of the executive members of the Whakatane Returned Services' Association on May 29. The following Executive members were present: Messrs H. McDonald, J. Cannell, E. A. Currah, F. Hawthorne, G. W. Mexled, J.. Bryant, A. J. Atkinson, A. G. Nell, D. McCallum, A. Hall, I. B. Gow, G. F. Thomas and G. A. Head, secretary. Apologies were received from Messrs Delves and Luxton . Considerable correspondence was dealt with, comprising matters, of pensions and Widows Mothers allowances. The secretary reported that the following figures were available: to date in connection with the Poppy Day appeal as follows:— Poppy Sales £15!) 12 11 Donations 8(i 1 0 Cattle Drive 195 12 (! Total 4.11 (i Further cattle had been promised and, had not yet been sold so that the. final figures cannot be arrived at just at this period. The Executive expressed the thanks of the local association to all who had assisted by way of donations: of cattle and cash, also to the willing helpers Cor their valuable assistance on Poppy Day. It was proposed that 10 per cent of the proceeds of Poppy Day be set aside for ilie purpose' of a Memorial Fund, to enable Memorial stones to be placed on graves of soldiers passing on. This was earried unaniniousiy . Considerable discussion took pWee on the matter of Returned Soldiers having to pay for the loss of clothing and equipment -m being discharged iioni the forces, and it was '•es.oived that any eases of men being charge.! for losses should report the .same to the local U.S.A.
