IN OPEN CLASS Harmony, a successful performer in the hack ranks, is progressing so well in lier track work that she is confidently expected to be quite a payable proposition in the open class. FAILED TO STAND El Maynell, the Wanganui hurdler who suffered a partial breakdown last year, but Avho Avas re-cammisl- - recently, has again failed to stand a preparation, and therefore will not carry racing colours this winter.. POSITION OF STARTER Mr R. H. Skipwith has been appointed starter to the Pakuranga Hunt Club, Avhicli Avill probably stage a race meeting at Ellerslie in September. MELBOURNE CUP DATE ALTERED Because of a new order, restricting holidays to Saturdays, Australia's greatest horse race, the Melbourne Cup, has been changed to Saturday, November 7. According to a Melbourne official, the race had been booked' as usual for the second Tuesday in November, Avhich is a holiday.
