STRAYING STOCK
WAIMANA GORGE NUISANCE ROAD SERVICE'S COMPLAINT As a result of a slight accident when a Rotorua service catstruck a beast which: was straving oni the road on the Opotiki side of the Waimaua Gorge on the 7tli instant, the officer in charge of the Opotiki branch of N.Z. Road Services wrote the Whakatane County Council complaining. Hie added that: Drivers had informed him that the straying of stock on the road in the Waimana Cor£e to Nukuhou vicinity had of late been prevalent and particularly so after dark. One of the cars on the same service run had the; same misfortune in the vicinity of Nukuhou, and on such occasion the matter was reported, to the Opotiki County Clerk. The writer stated that it was afterwards ascertained that the beast in this case also was straying on the i road in the area under the council's jurisdiction and the council asked to do what it could in preventing tliisi straying of stock, which, if allowed to persist might result in accidents of a more serious nature. The council decided that Read Services Opotiki be advised that it was ready, and willing at all times to take any action it reasonably could to keep the Whakatane-Opotiki State Highway or any highway free, from straying stock, but it understood the primary responsibility for attending to straying stock on, State Highways was the responsibility of the Transport Department.
