EARLIER CLOSING ON FRIDAY
TWO factors arise out of the question of closing retail premises half an hour earlier on Friday evenings. One is the honest opinion of many businessmen, that the public can quite readily plan its shopping period to suit the new arrangement, with little or no inconvenience, the other is the growing shortage of stock which dictates a certain desire to conserve as many lines as possible in order to maintain their supply. The fact that so few of the retailers answered the call to the meeting does not necessarily imply that the suggestion has been negatived but rather that the growing demands now made upon the average persons time, makes it impossible for them to attend to their own interests as in the past. While there is little reason to suppose that town, shoppers would be inconvenienced there ,is on. the other hand a strong possibility of country residents objecting to the restriction.
