"Bayoneted Eels Hundreds of eels were bayoneted by a party of soldiers in the Koputaroa Stream, near Himatangi, according to a report from a meeting of the Palmerston North sub-branch of the Acclimatisation Society. While resting on the bank one .of the soldiers saw a very large eel swimming downstream and, fixing his bayonet, he speared it. But it was followed by a run of eels apparently making for the sea, so the whole party joined in the attack. The unusual sport was a great success and the pile of eels thrown on to the imnk was described as amazing.
