QUESTION OF RETAIL PRICE » lIANGITAIKI FARMEiRS QUERY In answer to a query from the Rangitaiki Branch of the, Ncav Zealand Farmers' Union relatiA r e to the wide divergence between the buying and selling prices of tinned meat, the Provincial Secretary, Mr A. E. Robinson, has supplied the following information:— The meat going into cans, at least from the A.F.F. Co., is entirely cull cow beef or boner and second qualities, paid for by Government at 3.480(1 per lb. There is an equalisation scheme to cover freight charges from inland Avorks, but the: essential facts are as follows: — Government pays 3.485(1 per lb — boned Avcight. Schedule rate is £1 per lOOlbs. equals 2/4 (in quarters, not boned). The schedule rate covers meat, hides and some offal, less killing charges of .087(1 per lb. Works payment for meat for canning, as at Auckland Works, which can meat: Shins 3.005 d per lb, othermeat 3.315 d per Is. The ordinaiy Government payment is squared against canning, or vice versa, so'one statement -will do for all. The payment for 7(5151bs at 3.485 d was £110 11s (id less killing £31 (is 4d. £70 5s 2d. AA-erage price of meat to Government- (or canners) is thus 2.4977(1 per lb boned,-frce of all charges. Works using bull beef to mix with coav beef get the meat at 1/- per 100 lbs if they pay at schedule rates.
