OBITUARY

MR JOHN BAILEY

The death has occurred of Mr John Bailey a well known and highly respected Ohope resident. Born in the little village of Tiveney Killycloney, Northern Ireland, in 1865, he arived, in this, country in 1911. Following up the work of his family he farmed first in Taranaki then in Cambridge and finally came to the Bay of Plenty in 1922. Coming to Whakatane he bought a piece of land at Piripai near the present Paper Mills. Selling out to advantage he joined the P.W.D. as drainnge foreman holding this positoin till his retirement nine years ago. Moving to Ohope lie purchased several properties and built houses thereon. Two years ago his health began, to fail and he was finally forced to enter the public hospital where he remained till his death. Though quiet and reserved by nature he had many friends many of whom attended his funeral last i Wednesday.

JOHN ROBSON CHARLESTON A link with the earlier days of Taranaki was severed by the death of Mr J. H. Charleton of Taneatua. which occurred in the Whakatane hospital. Born at Raglan in 1881 the late Mr Charleton came of pioneering stock and was bush felling at the age of 14. Joining the New Zealand Railways, he worked on line construction through lo Stratford, remaining in the Stratford, district for some years. Coming to the Bay of Plenty, he took up sharemilking at Taneatua last year. The late Mr Charleton was a well known athlete in his younger days, having won many trophies for axemanship, running and wrestling. His reputation in this respect will be remembered by many ex-Taranaki residents now living in this district. He leaves a wife and eleven children most of whom are married and settled in the Taranaki district.
