CARTAGE OF WOOL

RAILWAY DEPARTMENT TO CONTROL POSITION OF SMALL FARMERS A report from the Putaruru branch was received at the March meeting of.' the Auckland Farmers' Union, to the effect that in the despatch of wool from that centre preference had been given to large producers to the detriment of the "Small man." Details were supplied by Mr K. S. Cox. who also spoke on the matter. Enquiries made by the secretary revealed that owing to the congestion at the wool stores, the brokers asked the Railways Department to curtail the inflow of wool. As a result, the Department instructed stationmasters not to send forward odd ' bales of wool, but to wait until they I had a full truck load. This was quite justifiable, since the demands of the Army have caused a serious i shortage of trucks. But it had the I result that the bigger men, who sent « in enough bales to make up full f

truck loads, got theirs away first. The manager of one of the wool stores in Auckland had suggested that wherever possible the farmers should make arrangements between themselves next season for the grouping of consignments. He stated that it was surprising in how many casesfarmers take wool down to a flagstation and dump it in the shed, without notifying anybody of the fact. Next season, Ire said, the consignment of wool will definitely be controlled by the Railways Department, and sninl! producers will be well adv.ised to make arrangements for the grouping of their lots in order that their woel may be lifted as expeditiously as possible. Consignments to different firms may be mixed, since thev have an arrangement between Ihem to accept delivery.
