APPLES FOR SCHOOLS

OVERLAPPING TRANSPORT ALLEGED BEST QUALITY FOR CHILDREN At a recent meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Union Executive it was reported that apples were being carted from the King Country to Auckland, there to be sorted, and subsequently despatched to the Otoro hanga school, despite the fact that there were commercial orchards in close proximity to the school.

The Minister of Marketing in his reply stated that there were no commercial orchards of any size around Otorohanga, although there were one or two growers in a small way who had been given licences, to* sell to local retailers. The nearest depots to Otorohanga were ITawera and Hastings, and it was from these depots that supplies were drawn for (he country trade in the surrounding districts. The Internal Market:ng Department, he added, takes special care in the type of fruit sent ta schools to ensure that the apples arc ripe and (it for immediate consumption, whereas retailers can take supplies of either cooking or eating varieties in all stages of maturity.
