ONE-MAN FARMS

QUESTION OF APPEALS

SUGGESTION TO GOVERNMENT

At last Executive meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Union attention was drawn to the position of oneman farmers who were called up, and who, despite the virtual impossibility of making satisfactory arrangements for the continued maintenance of their farms, were disinclined to appeal. After a discussion the Executive 1 decided to> clarify the position by making an official pronouncement as follows: —

"In the opinion of this Executive, one-man farmers who are now being called up with the military forces will serve their country better by remaining in their present positions.

"By continuing in'the dual capacity of Home Guardsmen and producers, they can doi better than as soldiers alone, thereby allowing production to fall. Whatever their personal feelings are, we consider that it is the duty of all such men to appeal against military service and to leave the decision to the tribunal."
