SUSTAINED A FALL Astral Flame, last year's winner of the Grand National Steeplechase, was highly fancied for the Great Western Steeples last week, but on the previous day sustained an injury to his stifle through a fall on a bitumen road. The injury was not deemed a serious one, but it was thought better to withdraw him from his engagement in view of competing in more important events in the near future. N.Z. TRAINER RETURNING News from Sydney is to the effect that J. T. Jamieson's Randwick property has been purchased by Maurice McCarten, the well, known successful horseman. It is understood that Jamieson will return to New Zealand and may reside on his property at Cambridge. The Waikato Racing Club has altered the distance of the President's Handicap to one mile and threequarters, and the Stewards' Handicap from six to seven furlongs. HE-COMMISSIONED The Little England—Peruse gelding, Little Ruse, owned in Te Aroha, has been re-commissioned with a view to winter racing. IN WINNING VEIN Secret Flight who is registering a run of successes in O'tago is a four year old mare by Night Raid— Full Fling. She is a half-sister to the good mare, Wild Career. A SUCCESSFUL TRIP The Te Rapa owned Full Hand, who won the Hawke's Bay* Cup from a good field, followed up his success on the second day r by accounting for the Te Mahanga Handicap. As he carried 8.3 and ran the mile and quarter in 2.5, he must itoav be quite at the top of his form. Since being solid a few weeks ago at guineas has won over £600 in stakes. NARROWLY BEATEN Bronzo, a stable mate of Landveyor, also put up a good shewing when lie carried 9.8 and only went under by a head to Kouraeka in the Eden Handicap, one mile, run in 1.38. Both these gallopers will compete at the Avondale meeting, and later at the Great Northern, fixture. WELL BRED WINNER King Herod, the winner of the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, is a grey colt by Theio—Lacquer, by Lackham —Orazone, by Misogne—Ota, by Seaton Delaval—Tamora, by Musket, Theio was got by Tetratema—Thyene by Sunstar—Sebenico, by AVilliam the Third.
