The Whakatane court list, heard before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., yesterday was a substantial one ranging from charges of drunkenness to breaches of Social Security payments.
RaAvi Molilalia who failed to appear Avas charged Avich assisting in the commission of an offence hy receiving liquor for consumption by Maoris. Sergeant Farrell said that the defendant had been accosted in the street Avith four large bottles of beer. He first admitted haA'ing been giA'en the liquor and later said that he had stolen it. Fined £3 and costs. James King Avas charged with having driven a vehicle Avithout the: necessary certificate of fitness and Avith defective brakes. Sergeant Farrell said the case Avas brought as the result of an accident when an examination disclosed the above offences. Fined 30s and costs 30s. Prohibition Breaches For a breach of his prohibition order at Te Teko on February 28, Sam Kakara (Mr Otley) pleaded guilty. Police eA'idenee showed that defendant had on this occasion assaulted his wife and caused so much damago that the police had to be called. Fined £3 and costs 30s. Toby Simon for a similar ofl'ence for A'vhich he could giA'e no explanation Avas also fined £3 and 30s costs. Negligent Driving Charged Avith failure to keep a proper lookout whilst driving a truck at Hillcrest o<n March 7, Richard Frederick Bluett pleaded guilty.
Sergeant Farrell said that the case was the result of defendant taking a bend on the wrong side and colliding with a bread van. Otherwise he had the reputation of being a good driver. Fined £1 and costs 15s. Parents Prosecuted Sidney Nepata, a Poroporo Maori, was proceeded against for failure to sea that his daughter regularly attended school. The police stated that in a period of 45 school days tllie child only attended a single day. It was understood that she was kept home in order to work on the farm. Fined 20s and costs 235. Social Security Breaches John Miller claimed that ill-health had prevented him from attending to the regular payment of liis Social Security levy of which he was some £3 in arrear. Pie- had endeavoured to meet it since. Fined £1 and costs 225. Hohepa Watarawi for a similar default amounting to £3 3s Gd. The Social Security officer said that continued warnings had been issued without avail. Fined £4 and costs 21s. Pita Pouwhare for the same breach amounting to £3 10s was lined £2 and 25s costs. Wati Kora admitted similar in debtedness to the extent of £3 7s (id. Fined £4 and costs 2os. Tui Tawera was charged with persistently ignoring the dues owed under the Employment Promotion Act and also the, Social Security Act. Though reminded lie had made no effort to meet his obligations, which amounted to £7 6s 6d.
Fined £4 on each count plus costs 255.
Taylor Tai who was £7 6s 6(1 In arrear, stated that lie had been ill fcir some timei and luul left the matter of meeting the levy with his father who had however died since 1 . In accordance with Native custom the Social Security book had been buried with other goods with tin: body in defendant's absence. Fined £4 on each count and costs 25 s. Traffic Offences The traffic officer proceeded against Cletis Parcnara who on Januarv 21 was charged with allowing two Jersey cows to be at large on the road at iMatata. Fined 10s and costs 275. John Bunn for riding a bicycle without a light was fined 5s and costs l"2s. Other offenders in this direction were Hugh Docherty and George Dickie, who were similarly treated.
