RACING NOTES

TWO GOOD RACES The Surveyor gelding, Landveyor, ran two solid races when lie finished second to Night Pilot in the Presidents Handicap and occupied a similar position behind Seal aw in the H. O. Nolan Handicap. In both races Landveyor stayed on well when being hard ridden, and the Green Lane trainer, D. J. Arnott, is unlucky racing has been restricted. Otherwise Landveyor would probably have picked up a good stake, as the gelding is right on the top of his form and is still nicely placed In the handicaps. A DISAPPOINTMENT Foxola was somewhat of a disappointment at Ellerslie. The Fox-| bridge filly was expected to make a ] bold showing in the Easter Handicap, but she never appeared likely to take part in the finish. On the second day she was tried out over a mile and a half, but again failed to run prominently, and it may be that she had trained off a little. * She certainly did not run her usual solid races. RETURN TO FORM Radiant Vaals shewed something like his best form when he finished Second to Phaleron in the Islington Handicap at Ellerslie. He was always within striking distance of the lead, and finished on strongly, but had np chance of reaching Phaleron which, after his good showing in the Easter Handicap, was the logical favourite. Radiant Vaals should be a good winter proposition, as he handles a soft track well. VERY SPEEDY JUVENILE Although he has not quite reached the high place that is equal to winning one of the classics, there is no doubt about the speed possessed by Sleepy Fox. In the Onslow Stakes at Ellerslie he never gave these opposed to him in the second division any chance to dispute the issue, and though the margin in his favour at the end was but a head, he scored impressively. As he carried 9.2 and ran the six furlongs a fifth of a second faster than Bonny Pay did to win the Champagne Stakes, it was no mean performance on the part of Sleepy Fox, and he should be a brilliant three year old next season. A SOLID MARE In Golden Survey Mr J. C. Gerrand has a fine galloper, and she has been a great proposition to liim this season. She met with interference in the Easter Handicap, a race in which she may otherwise have been very hard to beat. Her victory on Monday in the Huia Handicap was 18-carat, as she was not well placed at the home turn, and she was. conceding the leaders several lengths at that stage. However, when the final furlong was entered upon she came along in great style and scored brilliantly. She will be fairly well up in the weights from noAV on, but she is quite callable of continuing the good work. A FINE EFFORT Outside the brilliant win of Kindergarten in the Easter Handicap, there was noi better performance than that of Beau Leon in the H.O. Nolan Handicap. Mr E. H. Clicksey's fine galloper was given the job of a real horse in being set to carry 9.10. He stripped well and ran a slashing race, but the task was just a bit beyond him, and he was beaten into third place by Sealaw, in receipt of 271b, and Landveyor, in receipt of 3.311). As the judge's decision was a length and a head, it was a great effort on the part of Beau Leon. THE LEADING TWO YEAR OLD Up to the Auckland Easter meeting the question as to which two-year-old co,aid be given the honour of being the best of the season, was still deenled to be undecided. By winning the Great Northern Champagne Stakes Bonny Pay is being awarded the title. This Autopay representative has won the four northern classic event* this season.THREE SUCCESSIVE VICTORIES While members of the Foxbridgc family have been gaining turf fame in the north Mr J. R. McKenzic's Scottish Dale has been scoring in the South Island. On Easter Monday he was victorious in the Canterbury Great Easter, which made his third successive win.
