TWO YOUTHS IN COURT

COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE

At the Opotiki Police Court be-* fore Messrs J. T. Merry and C. F. ; Hansen, Justices, sericus charges were* heard against two Maori youths, William Keha and Kruger MatengaThey were charged that on March 26 at Opotiki, with intent to defraud. they obtained from Shalfoon: and Francis articles valued at £1 10s id and tiie sura of £11 7s 8d in money by false pretences, viz., by falsely representing that a cheque drawn, on the Union Bank of Australia for the sum of £12 18s by William Reha Avas valid. A further charge in respect of a cheque presented at tho Masonic Hotel for the sum of £8 10s by Kruger Matenga was also heard. Both accused were charged Avith committing forgery and making a false document. Sergeant J. Isbister, who conducted the case on behalf of the police, stated that accused came from Cape Runaway and Omaio. Oiv the night of March: 24 they visitedl the house of Mr li. Helmbright afc Kutarere where they stayed for the night. Before they left they removed two unused cheque forms from the house and used these, forging; the name of F. Amoarao and F. Wil-» liams as the drawers, and cashing the cheques at Shalfoon and Francis and the Masonic Hotel. Evidence was given to the effect that the two accused had made a number of purchases from Messrs Shalfoon and Francis, tendering the stolen cheques which had been falsely signed and which were subsereturned as dishonoured. Sergeant Isbister produced the. two cheques, and also a sheet of paper which was found in Matenga's possession, and on which they had been practising the signatures that were* found on the cheques. When accused were arrested they had £13 15s 8(1 in their possession, which they stated was part of the money from the cheques they had cashed. They had spent, between them, £7 12s 4d of the money received, by cashing the cheques.,, Both accused pleaded guilty and were committed for sentence to the Supreme Court at Auckland.
