TAURANGA VISITED
SCOUTS EASTER TRIP WHAIvATANE TROOPS PICNIC By way of overcoming, at least to some extent some of the disappointment felt by the local Scout troop at the abandonment of the usual Easter Rally, a picnic to Tauranga by those who could make the trip was arranged by the committee anil took place last Monday. Some thirty boys took part and under Scoutmaster Thomas had a thoroughly enjoyable day. The boys were met by District Commissionei Christian who with two of his senior Scouts acted as hosts during the day and provided tea and refreshments in the Tauranga Scout Hall. The highlight of the day was a visit to the old Mission House "The Elms," where Miss V. Maxwell the charming old lady caretaker went to great pains to show the boys over the house, the grounds and the library, telling them all, in the process the wonderful story cf the early trials and struggles of its original owner —Archdeacon Brown. All the boys had the privilege of ringing the old mission bell and later visited the historic cemetery where lay the men who fell at the tragic Gate Pa assault.
