IN GERMANY

LIFE. IN PRISON CAMP

WORD FROM CAPT. C. LE LIEVRE

A letter dated December 13th and posted through the New Zealand 1 High Commissioner's! Office, London, has just been received by Mrs C. H. Le Lievre of Whakatane, from her husband Capt. Le Lievre who is now a prisoner of war in Germany. The covering letter which is from the officer in the Commissioner's office, in charge of the Prisoners or "War Section states that as the PanPacific air mail route was now no longer available, the letter was being sent by surface route. Endeav- ■ ours were now being marie to arrange for New Zealand Prisoners of War to send letters home by air mail from Germany, via Turkey and Baghdad and thence by the Empire Airways Service* Capt Le Lievre's letter written from the camp Oflag V 1.8., reads: — "Air mail to New Zealand seemingly being disorganised I am trying this way through the High Commissioner's office. Let me know the date j T ou receive this. With this Japanese war on our mail from New Zealand will be seriously delayed "I'm thinking. Also I expect you will get little petrol but thank goodness you have houses. Italian and Ger--man newspapers which we get and read say Miles and Hargest and one "New Zealand Brigade were taken in Libya. Probably the poor old sth. Brigade. So far none of them have arrived here. No doubt this new war with Japan will seriously affect the farm, but do not worry over that. Weather has been mild but I don't like the long nights. We are a happy family of 13 in our hut and they •call me "Uncle." We are seven from 43 to 52 years, six of them are "Old "Dogs" taken in France 18 months ago and we have s.i.x quite young boys, nice lads, flyers."
