BUTTER INTO GUNS

From 187,500 tons of potatoes could be made 16,875 tons of alcohol. This alcohol could be used instead of petrol for a great many purposes, freeing approximately 11,000 tons of petrol. That amount of aviation petrol would enable 250 bombers and 250 fighters to raid London every night for two months. 10.000 tons of meat could be converted into 1218 tons of fats, from which enough glycerine could be obtained to supply fluid for the recoil system of 14,000 "2:5 pounder" guns. 50,000 tons of milk would make enough butter to replace 2126' tons of margarine. This releases enough fats to make 1850 tons of lubricating oil—enough to lubricate 50 submarines on 12 journeys across the Atlantic. The residue from the milk could be made into 1500 tons of casein for plastics, which can be used for manufacturing anything from ash-trays to aeroplane parts. Ten shiploads of oats for foddei. would release 1 68,260 tons of soya beans (calory value) from which enough Nitro-glycerine could be produced to use as the propelling power in 896,000 4/7 inch shells. Apart from the nitro-glycerine obtainable it would also be possible to obtain 7000 tons of yarn from the remaining 57,338 tons of soya bean cake. 8000 tons of rye could replace in goods value 30,000 tons of potatoes which would produce enough alco- ■ hoi to make enough synthetic rub--1 bcr to produce enough tires to. send ■ 2000 army trucks from Berlin to I Madrid and back 100 times. Jf the diesel oil required to fuel - a German submarine for a two 1 week's cruise in Atlantic Ocean were 5 used by cod fishing trawlers off Norway, they could produce enough vitamins (in cod liver oil) to sup- , ply 600.000 people for six months with all the Vitamin "D" and 900- ' 000 people for the same period with till the Vitamin "A" they require. (It should be remembered that the Germans have already reduced the 1 amount of Diesel oil available to e the Norwegian Cod Fishing Fleet, - because this oil is required by submarines.) —(8.P.)
