BACK-FIRING IN CARS
Back-firing, or rather explosions In the exhaust system, which actually are rather a different thing, indicate a lean mixture.. If these
noises are in evidence on a down grade but the engine performs well on the flat, it is best not to interfere with the carburettor setting but to open the choke slightly and so. allow a richer mixture to enter the combustion chamber. A true backfire is not this noise in the exhaust system but arises from valve trouble, an inlet valve being still open when the mixture fires, so allowing a blow-back into the carburettor This is dangerous, as liable to cause fire. The other trouble may result Ln a damaged muffler.
