Risks of Rear Seat At least one person in Auckland has decided never to travel in the rear seat of a motor car again. Recently he was enjoying a cigarette and travelling along the Great South Road at somewhere near the 45-mile-an-liour mark when there was a loud cry of "Stop the car." It, was later found that a bee had been blown in the front window and had hit the unlucky back-seat passenger right in the eye. In his excitement to render himself first aid he dropped the cigarette from his mouth and the smouldering "fag" did the double job of burning a hole in his pants and raising a blister. The only satisfaction to the smoker was that the bee had been killed.
Gathering Linen Flax Linen flax in the Gore district which, by reason of adverse weather conditions, cannot be dealt with efficiently by the pulling machines, are being gathered by hand. School pupils and members of the Women's War Service Auxiliary, the Home Guard and the general public of the Gore and Mataura districts have combined in an effort to save the crops. Volunteer labour made a start on the first of the crops last week, when 250 pupils and teachers of the Gore High School Ave re taken to a crop of 13 acres. They Avere joined by pupils of the Knapdale School, and some three acres of crop was pulled, tied into sheaves, and stocked.
N.Z. Servicemen in Britain Acting on the recommendation of Mr Jordan, High Commissioner for New Zealand in Great Britain, the standing committee of the National Patriotic Fund Board has approved a grant of £1000 to an organisation in Great Britain, which provides entertainment and hospitality for servicemen from the Dominions. Last year 2600 New Zealand air and naval personnel were catered for in this way. "I have visited their hostels in London and Bournemouth where refreshments are provided free at all hours and the men are really cared for in good conditions, resembling New Zealand home life," states a report received from Mr Jordan.
