CUR EMPIRE
DID you ever pause to think that the British Commonwealth of Nations is a unique experiment .... it is the first successful attempt* to build in the world a social structure within which hundreds of millions of men of every race and creed, can live lives of individual freedom. It is the first successful attempt to create a union of free., independent and equal nations, brooking no interference in their internal affairs acknowledging no duties save those freely undertaken—and ye:t ready at all times to stand together in defence of their joint ideals. The British Empire is not perfect . It has not yet attained the measure of perfection that is so clearly within its grasp. Its course throughout three and a half centuries of growth records many mistakes and many abortive experiments. It has many shortcomings still. Yet where is its counterpart? Wherever else did human idealism and practical sense combine to weld one-fourth of the human race,, scattered over a quarter of this globe into an entity based on respect for individual freedom and spontaneously generating the willing service of all common interest.
