TURF-TOPICS

racing notes OUT OF A GOOD ONE R. 11. Martin has taken over Pass ion ace, by The Ace—Passionless., for Mr W. G. Vincent, who raced the dam with success. Passionate was previously trained by H. Dulieu at New Plymouth, but was sparsely raced. SON OF APRIL THE FIFTH The English thoroughbred three-year-old colt Ballater, has been purchased by Mr S. J. Brindle, of Matamata, who races Kaimanawa. Ballater is by April the Fifth from a winning mare, Caerlavcrock. It is intended later to use Ballater for breeding purposes.

CHANGE OF STABLES Owing to labour difficulties, To Haka lias been transferred by bis owner to G. Cobb's stables at Matamata. It -is intended to race Te Haka over hurdles events in the winter. The Speardance gelding" lias already shown proficiency in schooling. Cobb has also acquired a lease of Prince Rewa, which may be put to jumping. SIR CAMERON RESUMES

After being off the scene, since the spring the Posterity—Mirabeile II gelding Sir Cameron has been taken in hand again by I. Tucker. The spell has improved this four-year-old noticeably and he is now much more robust than "when last seen in public. During his three-year-old career SLr Cameron registered a number of line yerformances. and being a good stayer he should not be hard to place to advantage later on. REVENUE APPRECIATED The Government taxation in connection with the Franklin Racinft Club's meeting amounted to £59G9

10s Sd (for the one day) the receipt cf which AA'as doubtless much appreciated by the Treasury.

WAIMANA ACCESSIONS | Messrs F. J. SaA'age and Sons, of' VVaimana, have just added tAVo a-alvi-able thoroughbreds to their list of mares. They arc Short Circuit at 490 guineas and Linguist at 2.10 guineas. The first named is a half-sister to Paper Money to Rebel Chief, and Linguist a half-sister by Paladin to the successful two 3-car old Indian Sign.

WAS NOT DISGRACED Although beaten out of a place in the Oliinemuri Cup, the Whirlwind filly Gay Rosette ran a slashing race. W. Ensor always had her within striking distance of the leaders, and after the field turned into the straight she made a move into third place. She battled on gamely, but the weight 9.1, beat her audi she weakened again, although close up fourth behind the placed horses.

SHOULD WIN SOON The Foxbridgc filly Black KenAnl c can be ticked off to get on the winning list before long. She has had but three starts this season and lias been twice in the money. Her effort to beat all but Water Vixen in the Awaiti Stakes was a good one and, as H. Eva can be expected to work an improvement on her, she should be a very tough proposition for the others to dispose of next time she steps out in a novice event. AT A LONG PRICE

Verulam had had a dozen tries to ; w.in a race this season before she was successful in the Komata Handicap at Paeroa, and it -was not surprising therefore that her victory should be accompanied by a dividend of over a third of a century. She is trained by her owner. Mr S. A. Parsons, and prior lo Saturday's win had been twice second and twice third since last August. Verulam has a fair turn of speed and is by Cambria Park, -which is also the sire of such smart gallopers as Bronwen, Cambria and LlandalT. However, Verulam is rising six years, and it is hardly likely she will rise to the heights of the three mentioned.

HAD EVERY CHANCE The Cambria Park marc Broll wen had been galloping so Avell in training that she was .confidently expected to win the St. Patrick's Handicap at Pacroa. No cxeusc can be offered for her defeat, because she was well enough placed in running to win. but was unable to concede the necessary handicaps to several of her opponents. MISSED THE JUMP-OUT

The solidly supported Neenali nev- ] or looked like winning the St. Patrick's Handicap once the field had left the barrier. The son of Foxbridge drew the rails, but did not jump out with his usual smartness and was soon in the middle of the field. He remained in about the same position throughout the race, showing nothing of his accustomed brilliancy. Nccnah is a good ga - lopcr and cannot be discounted because of that one disappointing run.
