DEATH OF TOM MOONEY
The death is announced of Tom Mooney, aged 59, a former Labour leader, who served 22 years in prison for alleged participation in a
bombing outrage in San Francisco in 1916", during the "Preparedness Parade," in which 10 persons were killed.
Tom Mooncy was one of the leaders of the serious labour disputes in San Francisco in 1916, After the bomb outrage an Preparedness Day, Mooncj' and a fellow leader, Billings were arrested and charged with murder, Mooney produced evidence that lie was not at the scene of the crime, but the prosecution contradicted this. Both men were sentenced to death, but the charge was later commuted to life imprisonment. Repeated efforts were made by friends to regain freedom for the men. In 1931 Billings was released on parole, but Mooney refused to accept this offer and demanded a full clearance of his chartcter. After a prolonged legal battle a new trial was ordered in 1933, but it. was not till January, 1939, that he left St. Quentin Priscai, a free man after 22 j r cars in imprisonment.
