PROTECTION FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

AT.fT, who read it will admire the. tone of the letter in today's issue urging the construction of shelter trenches at the local school grounds. These are times when for oncte we feel that we cannot be bound by the caprice of a Board or a Department sitting in Wellington, and failing to grasp the seriousness of the position as pictured and realised by people living on the spot. The digging of trenches in the school grounds, whatever our own opinions are, should be done unreservedly, if it will make for greater peace of mind on the part of parents. We are not to be accused of anticipating trouble, but for the sake of the digging of a few lines of trenches which can easily be refilled when the danger is past, we fail completely to grasp the Department's unwarranted refusal to grant permission.

Warning" to Cyclists We have been asked by the Traffic Inspector to issue a fresh warning to bicycle riders who habitually use their machines at night without lights.

Mushrooms Again! The warm light drizzle which fell throughout yesterday has produced a substantial crop of mushrooms in and about Wliakatane, and many a table has been graced with these delicacies as a result.
