RACING NOTES

i j i CLARION CALL Clarion Call is La fie in -work and i-j reported to be looking as weli as ever. Ho i- being prepared for some of the big steeplechases later in tin? reason. tip to this stage Clarion Call lias not been tested sufficiently for an opinion to be formed of whether he will stand up to the required preparation.

addition to team The latest addition to J. M. Buchanan's team is the lour year old King's Cross, by Vaals from Princess WiUonvx. He was formerly trained by C. Morse at Takamni and is a big raking gelding that may be given a trial as a jumpei later on in the season. DUE for a win The Myosotis gekling Gunyali, one of H. Telford's team at Trentham, is showing improvemnt; in the money in each of his last three starts. In two races, at Trentham he filled second place, and a winning turn should not be far off, although his placed efforts are getting him up in the weights. BACKED OUT AT START While not suggesting that Premature could have beaten Salutation in the Thompson Handicap, the fact that the daughter of Posterity backed out of line just as the barrier was released, thereby losing about half a dozen lengths, must be weighed in her favour. Mr G. F. Moore's filly did rather well to finish second, and it would seem she is capable of running out a middle distance in good company.

WELCOME REAPPEARANCE j Foxiana. which was in the first flight of hurdlers last season, but had to be put aside owing to going amiss at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton, is due to make his reappearance in the hurdle event at Marton on Saturday, in which he is ' top-weight. Provided all goes well ' with the Hunting Song gelding it is ' intended to bring him north for the ' Auckland meeting, where he has ' been nominated for cross country events. > TWO ON END The four year old Leiglion—Habit - filly Black Robe was responsible for >* an attractive effort when she won' ; the Suburban Handicap at Tren- - tham. At her previous start has had been successful at Taranaki, where - she defeated the speedy Prince Plato, but she was then in receipt of 331b. At Trentham she was nicely weighed at 7.7. and Avon well. ' CONSISTENT ENJOYMENT r> ; The Aucklend owner Enjoyment is »; racing very consistently both over »; hurdles and on the flat, apparently 1, not suffering from a mixed diet. His last five starts have resulted in one win and four seconds and he if • looks a likely prospect for the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie at Easter. At the recent Wellington meeting a the 11 year old son cf Deliglitment contested the Highweight Handicap each day and raced well, although L *~ beaten on the first day by Martene and on the second day by an outsider, Ringless. If produced in the Karere Hurdles at Marton on Saturday lie may be the first choice with backers. SUCCESS DESERVED

Having his 19th race this season, :he Lion Arch gelding Stokowski won the Handicap Hurdles, a victory which did not come cut of its turn, •is at several meetings he had raced well without finishing in front. Following his -win in the hurdles, he was produced later in the McGuire Steeplechase, and was in front most of the way, only to be headed in the run home, first I)}' Small Boy and then by Conflagration, the last-nam-ed winning. Stokowski jumps well and should be a good prospect during the winter jumping season. A GOOD PERFORMANCE In the absence ol this season's juvenile ">tars'-' Kentish scored a very impressive win in the Karangahake Handicap, am: in carrying fJ.I3 to an easy victory the son of Soli-citor-General was responsible for an effort which will entitle him to eonr sideration in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Easter. With four wins and two second placing? to his credit in nine starts, Kentish is proving a great proposition for his owners, Messrs J. and P. E. Brenan. Two other Auckland two-year-olds in Bonny Pay and Beau Vaals have each won four races.
