INTENSIFIED TRAINING

LOCAL HOME GUARD UNITS

MOUNTED TROOPS TREK

All units c.f the Home Guard in I the Whakatane Command are undergoing intensified training. On Saturday last the medical corps observed the first of their regular halfday parades. The practical work was most helpful and after criticism of the various attempts at bandaging etc. for the supposed injuries, by Mr A. Carling all members agreed that the practice had been of great individual value. The mounted troop made a twoday trek to Kutarere. Leaving the Domain at 2.30 the troop made a pleasing picture as. it entered the Maraetotara Gorge and made for the rendezvous via the old Oh ope Road. The trip was made in good time and the camp out was made in a large woolshcd. All men agreed that the outing had been invaluable and apart from that—a thoroughly enjoyable one. The infantry, enginers and headquarters companies have also intensified their training, and a survey of the activities of both the Whakatane and Rangitaiki Battalions reveals a general application right through.
