FLAW IN OUR JUSTICE CODE

THE case recently before the local court dealing with a, fight between Maoris at Te Teko, reveals an obvious weakness in our vaunted Justice Code. Three men were successfully prosecuted by the police and, fined substantially. From ;a public- point of view all received their desserts for disturbing the peace. But, the unfortunate aspect, as unfolded by the evidence., was that the Maori who played the honourable part—who rose to the protection of another man (a relative) who was being grossly insulted, was rounded up with the other two and prosecuted. This defendant did what any decent man would have, under the circumstances, yet because he disturbed the pea,ce, he was hailed as a lawbreaker before the Court and duly fined. If the law is made to protect people from such behaviour, surely a man who went to the rescue, should receive thanks and recognition, rather than ranked as a criminal and fined as a brawler.
