A SLOWLY RUN RACE

The Hcrries Memorial Cup could not -lie termed a solidly run race. Passing the stand the contestants appeared to be nicely placed, but going' along the back stretch the, pace tvas porceptiblj'- eas3 r , the field apparently being content to allow the leader, Kraal, to slow it down. Along the top turn Kraal was till in front, and once into the straight the brilliant runs expected from the top weight division did not eventuate, with the result that Clinch was returned victorious in. the comparatively slow time of 2min 23secs as against 2.18 1-5 run a Te, Rapa the previous week by Lou Rosa. A GOOD PERCENTAGE Gay Lally, the three year old full brother to Gay Rosette, has started twice and won each time. On Saturday in the Waitoa Handicap he drew the No. 25 marble, but hopping (Tut quickly was soon in front. He won comfortably and should go on to further victories. A LUCKY WIN The start in the Waihou Handicap was decidedly irregular, and in the running Bronwen and River Plate were subjected to interference. In scoring a victory the ninth favourite, Dinky Di, was probably very lucky to win. Apparently he had an uninterrupted run throughout, or could not have ran six furlongs in 1.12 3-5. His supporters received a win dividend of nearly two score—■ not dollars but pounds. MAY MAKE AMENDS At Ellerslie on January 31 and at Te Rapa last week River Plate, with outside barrier draws, filled fourth place. On Saturday in the Waihou Handicap he suffered interference and again ran fourth. When his luck changes there will be a different story to tell. TURF WINNINGS Up to date Lou Rosa has Avon in stakes £6530, while the total to the credit of Beau Leon, also a four & r ear old, is £5440. It will be fully recognised that both are very payable propositions.
