IN A NAZI PRISON
NIEMOLLER AND THE ATHIEST
A former prisoner in Sachsenhausen concentration camp run by the Nazis in Germany, writes in the News Chronicle about Pastor Niemoiler, the famous opponent of Hitler. The Nazis locked Nicmollcr up for preaching against them. The camp commander —at Sachscnhausen —is determined to make Nicmoller "loose faith." For this purpose lie placed a convinced athiest and Communist in the cell next to Niemoller and allowed him to talk with the pastor and to take his daily half-hour's work at the same time in the same yard as the pastor. The athiest was a very intelligent man, vised to arguing. He had been promised all sorts of . advantages if he could "convert" Pastor Nicmoller. Actually, both prisoners enjoyed discussing their different viewpoints. This lasted four days. On the 15th, the Communist begged Niemoller to lend him his Bible, which, he said, he had not seen since the day he was confirmed, but which had now assumed quite a different importance for him. The same day, the camp commandant had the athiest removed.
